How to Get Smooth Candle Top
Oct 28 , 2023
Hello my crafty candle friends! Today I'm going to let you in on my secret weapon for getting perfectly smooth candle tops every time - the mighty heat gun!
Uneven candle tops
We've all been there - you pour your wax oh so carefully, holding your breath to not get any bubbles, and it looks flawless. Then a few hours later you notice a dip or bump in your once-pristine candle top. Noooooo!
Why candle imperfections occur
There are a million little things that can cause uneven tops - temperature fluctuations while pouring or as your candle sets, fragrance oils that accelerate or inhibit crystallization, even drafts across the top as it hardens. It's enough to make you pull your hair out!
Secret weapon - The heat gun
But don't stress, I've got you covered. The secret is a simple heat gun, and it will change your candle game forever!
This handy little heat gun cost me about 20 quid years ago, and it's one of the best investments I've made. Not only does it give you flawless tops every time, it also lets you create amazing effects like marbled and layered candles. It's a must-have tool for any candle maker!
How to fix a candle
Let me show you how quick and easy it is to fix a bumpy top and get that smooth, glossy finish that looks professionally made.
Here's a candle that got a major sinkhole and ridge right down the center as it cooled. Total bummer, but no worries - we can remedy this in 60 seconds with the heat gun!
I simply warm the wax gently, moving the heat gun back and forth until the wax is liquid enough to smooth out. Then I let it re-harden flat and voila - candle top perfection!
After 30 - 60 seconds the candle wax will melt and fill in the sinkhole and cover up the bump tops
So don't toss your bumpy candles - with the help of a heat gun, you can give them a makeover and no one will know the difference. Your candle making game will reach a whole new level!
And the finished product after it's had time to reset.
Let me know if you have any other candle challenges I can help with. Until next time, happy candle making!
