How to mix paraffin and soy wax together
Mar 18 , 2022
Candle making has become a hobby favoured by many people across the globe. Not only is it a great DIY task but you’ll get to create the perfect candle for yourself. When making your very own candle you’ll have to consider a few things such as what colour you want it to be, what aroma it should throw, and which wax should you use.
This may sound a tad overwhelming. That’s why we’re here!
We’ll explore how to blend two common waxes; paraffin and soy wax. First, we will touch on what these two waxes are.
Paraffin Wax
This is one of the most common types of waxes used to make candles due to its price and properties. Paraffin wax is relatively inexpensive as it’s cheaper to produce compared to other waxes. This wax also holds a high amount of colour of scent.
Unfortunately, it isn’t regarded as an environmentally friendly wax, and it isn’t a clean burner either. So, be wary about which surfaces you burn a paraffin wax candle.
Soy Wax
Soy wax is sourced from the soybean. It is more eco-friendly than paraffin wax, however, it is linked to deforestation due to the mass production of soybeans. A fantastic pro about this wax is that it is a slow burner.
If you’re the type of person who really needs a strong-smelling candle, then soy wax candles won’t be your first pick. Soy wax doesn’t hold scents very well and it doesn’t throw an aroma well either.
Why Blend Soy and Paraffin Wax?
Each of these waxes has its own pros and cons. When you blend them together then you’re creating a wax with tons of great properties. The candle will hold scents well, last longer, and look better too.
This combination creates a smooth-looking and hard candle that can last for hours. You’ll also be able to get really creative in terms of what size and shape candle you make.
How to Blend Them Together
Now that we’ve discussed the different waxes, we can explain the best way to blend them. When mixing together the melted waxes there are a few combinations that you can try out.
Before you mix together paraffin and soy wax, you’ll first need to determine what type of candle you want to make as well as the purpose of the candle. This will influence the amount of each wax that you mix together.
Typically, you can mix together 2 parts soy wax and 3 parts paraffin wax. This will make for a great-looking and smelling candle. If you want to make a pillar candle, then we suggest blending 7 parts paraffin wax and 3 parts soy wax.
For a harder wax, you should blend 80 percent soy wax and 20 percent paraffin wax. If a softer wax is what you’re looking for then it’s best to combine 80 percent paraffin wax and 20 percent soy wax.

When mixing together these two waxes you need to choose the best combination for you. Always remember to keep in mind the purpose of your candle and the desired size. We wish you all the best in your candle-making journey!
If I'm totally honest, there's not much reason for us as candle makers to blend our own waxes as there's so many readily available wax blends created by fantastic companies. Companies with better knowledge and access to ingredients than we can get!
I'd suggest trying a parasoy blend, which has been through rigorous testing and designed for specific results. Not to say we can't achieve a certain result by blending our own, but sometimes its easier to leave these things up to the experts!
