Scents Can Have A Positive Effect On Your Mood

In these modern times there's a lot of external stress put upon us, did you know burning certain candle scents can improve your mood. Candle scents are not just for decoration, but can have a positive effect on your mood depending on the scent.
Scents and their power to change our thoughts, behaviours and emotions has been known throughout history. In ancient Egypt fragrances were used in religious practices, burning incense and bathing in oils was common. In fact the word perfume is derived from Latin as per fumare meaning "through smoke".
The power of scents can also have a big influence on the retail industry. For example, 'sweet' smells such as vanilla and cinnamon have been shown to induce feelings of 'personal warmth' in shoppers where-as musky scents such as ambergris can create a sense of excitement.
Fragrances inhaled go to the brain where the neurological effect can alter mood. They trigger areas in the brain that relate to emotions. When an odor (such as the scent of a flower, or food) enters the nose, it stimulates thousands of receptor cells in the olfactory epithelium. The signals given off by these cells travel through nerve fibers to an area at the base of the brain called the limbic system, which is involved with emotions and memories. Which is why certain smells can trigger a sense of nostalgia something I like to recreate in my candles.
Scents can have positive effects on mood, stress reduction, sleep enhancement, self-confidence, and physical and cognitive performance. According to a study by researchers at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, West Virginia, participants who inhaled the aroma of ginger reported feeling more attentive and ready to take on a task, while those exposed to peppermint reported feeling happier.
